With e-cigarettes, two things must be renewed regularly: Firstly, the liquid and secondly the vaporizer unit (replacement vaporizer)

There is no clear answer to the question of how often a replacement vaporizer is due. The reason for this is that the need for a replacement vaporizer depends on several factors and thus there can be no blanket answer.

What is an evaporator unit/coil?

The vaporizer unit, as the name suggests, is the part of the e-cigarette that converts the liquid into vapor by heating it. Usually, this part of the e-cigarette is called the vaporizer head or coil.

A vaporizer unit consists of three main components. Inside the housing is a heating wire or the mesh grid, which are wound like a coil around a wick (usually made of absorbent cotton), which in turn is soaked in liquid in the tank. The two ends of the heating wire are connected to the battery. If the button is now pressed, the coil heats up, causing the liquid to evaporate from the wick (absorbent cotton).

What determines the lifetime of the evaporator head/coils?

How long you can use a vaporizer unit before you need a replacement vaporizer is determined by several factors. The acidity and the ratio of PG and VG of your base are two important aspects. The amount of vapor and the current flow (power of your e-cigarette) are also important to consider.

A higher acid content of the liquid (for example, with fruity flavors or menthol liquids) ensures faster wear of the vaporizer unit. Liquids with a high VG content also ensure that a replacement vaporizer must be purchased sooner. The reason is that these are more viscous and do not evaporate completely without residue.

Also some flavorings, which are used in sweet liquids, can clog the wadding in the coil quite quickly. Liquids that lead to faster wear of the evaporator head are often colloquially referred to as "coil killers".

As mentioned, the current flow (or power) also determines the life of your vaporizer. The higher the wattage and voltages are, the faster the power of the vaporizer unit degrades. This means it doesn't heat up as well and consequently produces less vapor.

Of course, the lifespan of the vaporizer is also determined by your vapor behavior. Obviously, someone who permanently pulls on their e-cigarette will need a replacement vaporizer faster than someone who only vapes occasionally.

How do I know that my coil (replacement vaporizer) is at the end?

You will recognize the approaching end of your vaporizer unit by various signs. First, you will notice that there is not so much vapor anymore. At some point, you will notice other signs. Also, a change in taste, bubbling noises, and leaking liquid indicate that it's time to get a replacement vaporizer. Otherwise, soon no more vapor will be produced.

The reduction in the amount of vapor is usually the first signal. A new vaporizer unit provides thick, aromatic and very dense vapor clouds. Over time, these will become smaller and smaller. Since this is a gradual process, you may not notice it very quickly. But once a new replacement vaporizer is installed, you will clearly feel and taste the difference.

What is a dry hit, and what should be done when it occurs?

Very often, the vapor gets a burnt taste when it comes to the end with the vaporizer unit - the so-called dry hit. Although there may be other reasons for this, such as an empty tank or too high voltage, the burnt taste is a classic sign of a burnt out vaporizer. When using your e-cigarette, over time, the wick of the vaporizer unit will change color, become clogged with residue from the liquid, and burn up. At this point, the vapor will feel dry and scratchy.

In this case, the tank must be thoroughly washed (cleaned) to remove all micro particles in the tank (burnt taste). Tip before you change the replacement vaporizer briefly smell the tank. If you no longer smell a burnt taste, you can replace the replacement vaporizer.

Otherwise, it could be that the new replacement vaporizer the burnt taste of tank (vaporizer) takes over again.

Why does it splash the e-liquid on my lips when I vaporize?

Maybe you've already gotten some liquid on your lips while taking a drag on your e-cigarette. Of course, this can also have various causes, but this is usually an early sign that it is time for a replacement vaporizer. Since the heating coil can no longer heat up the liquid properly, it is not completely vaporized and can get into the mouth. 

Or you do not steam at the specified minimum power of the replacement vaporizer (coils). Thus, the vaporizer can not vaporize as much e-liquid as it flows so that there is an excess of liquid, which then splashes when steaming in the mouth or on the lips.

Leaking liquid is often accompanied by the above-mentioned bubbling noises. These occur when the liquid can not be vaporized quickly enough and the vaporizer fills up. The solution, of course, is a quick replacement of the vaporizer.

If no replacement vaporizer is used, the wire will eventually not heat up at all, or only so weakly that no vapor is produced at all. You will notice this when you pull on your e-cigarette and nothing comes out. In the worst case, you will have the unvaporized liquid in your mouth. It is absolutely not advisable to wait that long. For the best vapor experience, you should use a replacement vaporizer as soon as you notice the first of the above signs.

How often is a replacement vaporizer needed?

As mentioned at the beginning, there can be no universal answer to this question. Too many factors determine the service life of the evaporator unit. From experience, however, one can roughly derive the following service life of the evaporator.
